Ground Screw and Screw Pile Foundations for Home Extensions

Realise the full potential of your home with a modern extension built on screw foundations. Our ground screws and helical screw piles, along with our skilled in-house installation team, deliver professional installations that align with your design requirements, access limitations, and site conditions – ensuring a robust, concrete-free foundation that meets building control requirements.

The benefits of ground screws and screw piles for home extensions

  • Rapid Installation

Fast and effective installation which requires no digging or concrete, creating an immediate foundation for your structure.

  • Tested and Quantifiable

Our ground screws can be compression load tested, and our helical screw piles are installed with calibrated torque monitoring. Both produce certified data for building control approval.

  • Designed to last

Our ground screws are fully galvanised to BS EN 1461:2009. Our helical screw piles are manufactured to EN 1090-1, ISO 3834, and EN ISO 1461. All products are CE-approved with a 20-year product guarantee.

  • Immediately load bearable

Both ground screws and helical screw piles are immediately load-bearing – so as soon as they are installed, you can start building.

  • Less labour required

Easy to install, with less labour cost. Ground screws can be installed in any weather or ground conditions.

  • Environmentally friendly

Reduced CO2 compared to pouring concrete. Helps protect habitats and prevent damage to tree root systems.

  • Lightweight & Compact

Ground screws eliminate access issues – screws, brackets, and tools can all be carried by hand. Helical screw piles are installed using compact tracked machines or excavators, suitable for restricted-access sites.

  • Reduced Disruption

A screw foundation system minimises disruption to your property, involving less noise, debris, and disturbance compared to traditional foundation construction.

  • Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS)

Our precisely installed ground screws and helical screw piles provide the perfect partner for modular panel design or SIPs buildings. The lightweight, fast-to-install, and simple design of SIPs panels enables you to construct your home extension in a matter of days. Your screw foundations enable you to enjoy a watertight and warm structure.

  • Timber Frame

Ground screws and timber frame structures are highly compatible, offering quick and stable foundations without the need for extensive excavation or concrete pouring. Their synergy provides environmental benefits, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness, making them an ideal pairing for construction projects.

  • Steel Frame

Steel frames are ideal for connecting to ground screws and helical screw piles, effectively transferring loads to point loads and easy to attach to our load-bearing flanges. They facilitate open-plan living, providing support for heavy loads with minimal position requirements.

  • Light Gauge Steel Frame

Steel frames are versatile, strong, and durable at a competitive price, which is why they are an emerging modern method of construction for house extensions. The lightweight nature means they do not incur heavy loads on the foundations. Unlike traditional timber products, steel frames are unaffected by weather conditions such as rain and snow.

Load Testing & Torque Reports For Building Control

We work with engineers, surveyors, architects, and contractors to meet the design load requirements specified for individual projects.

For ground screw installations, each project receives a compression load test to prove the load capacity on that specific site in line with your engineer’s loading requirements. Following the visit, our compression load testing is supplemented with a comprehensive report which offers data insights into our findings. This report is provided to your chosen building control officer for review and building control approval.

For larger or more complex extensions, our helical screw pile foundations provide an additional level of engineering documentation:

  • Machine-installed using excavators with calibrated torque monitoring – every pile verified on site in strict accordance with the engineered design criteria
  • Comprehensive torque pile logs recording installation torque, depth, pile identification, and performance data for every pile
  • Certified load capacity reports generated through deep foundation software
  • Stock sizes from 76R to 140R, with bespoke manufacturing to meet specific engineering specifications
  • Manufactured to EN 1090-1 (CE/UKCA conformity), ISO 3834 (welding quality), and EN ISO 1461 (hot-dip galvanising)

Whether you need ground screws for a single-storey timber frame extension or helical screw piles for a larger steel-framed build, we provide the certified data that your structural engineer and building control officer require.

Frequently asked questions

  • Ground screws are ideal for lighter single-storey extensions and timber frame builds. Helical screw piles are suited to larger or more complex extensions with higher structural loads – such as steel-framed or multi-storey builds. Both are immediately load-bearing and produce certified data for building control.

  • Yes. Helical screw piles integrate seamlessly with all modern construction methods including SIPs, timber frame, steel frame, and light gauge steel. Load is transferred efficiently to point loads, and our mounting systems connect directly to your chosen frame type.

  • Yes. Both ground screws and helical screw piles can be installed in conditions that would delay or prevent a concrete pour – including rain, cold weather, and waterlogged ground. This helps keep your extension project on programme regardless of the season.
